Stars of Food Security Awards Over the past 3 years the world has seen some frightening changes. Regions across the globe have experienced climate change induced agricultural collapse and have seen food price increases of 15 to 60%. All across the planet land speculation and development pressures have contributed to the scarcity of foodlands and escalation of food insecurity. British Columbia has not been immune to any of these changes. In a region that currently relies more on imported food than what we produce, the term food security has entered the language of the average citizen. Polls show that 93% of our population believe the province's foodlands must be protected, and governments and citizens in every corner of the province are racing toward a common vision of food self-reliance with courage and innovation. The Farmland Defence League of BC is pleased to announce the first Stars of Food Security Awards, a celebration of the people and activities that move British Columbia closer to being able to feed ourselves and future generations of BC children. The awards will be given every three years prior to municipal elections, but candidates in the areas of public service and governance may be nominated from all levels of government. Awards will be given at a reception specific to that purpose. The first Stars of Food Security Awards wine and cheese reception the evening of September 15th at the Fort Langley Heritage Hall. Tickets will go on sale at the beginning of August. Attached is a nomination form, and we invite you to share with us the achievements of organizations and individuals who have demonstrated real leadership in food security.
